With the clocks going back in October and the evenings getting darker earlier, it is important to ensure that your property is as secure as it can be from burglary which can be distressing for your tenants and can result in damage to your property.

How can you make your sure your property is as secure as it can be?

·         Install a five lever mortice lock for external timber doors or a three multi-point locking system for PVC-u external doors.

·         Ensure that on windows that can be easily accessed from the outside window locks are attached (although they but must not be attached to designated escape windows).

·         Install door chains.

·         Make sure the main entrance door to a shared property has a lock that meets the appropriate standard. (The freeholder or appointed manager is responsible for this).

·         Consider installing burglar alarms, defender alarms and security, night lights and spy-holes.

·         Ensure doors fit properly into their frame and are free from damage.

Fire safety advice at Christmas

·         Take extra care with candles – don’t leave them unattended, or near decorations or Christmas trees

·         Keep candles, lighters and matches out of reach of children

·         Make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished

·         Most fires start in the kitchen – don’t leave cooking unattended

·         Don’t attach decorations to lights or near fires or heaters

·         Do not overload sockets with Christmas lights and other appliances

·         Use an RCD for outdoor lights

·         Switch off Christmas lights before going out or going to bed. Or use a timer to switch them on and off automatically Real Christmas trees burn quickly so extra care needs to be taken

FACT: a burning Christmas tree can rapidly fill a room with fire and deadly gases.
