Renters’ Rights Act – Tenant Awareness

Who is this course for? Tenants & families of those renting (both social and privately renting) 

Course Content:

This short session gives tenants a clear, accessible understanding of their rights and responsibilities under the Renters’ Rights Act. It cuts through legal jargon and focuses on what tenants actually need to know to feel informed, protected, and able to challenge poor practice. Using realworld examples, mythbusting, and simple scenarios, the session empowers tenants to recognise when something isnt right  and what steps they can take.

Learning Outcomes: 

1. Understand the core purpose of the Renters’ Rights Act

  • Explain what the Act is trying to achieve
  • Identify the key changes affecting private renters

2. Recognise their rights under the new tenancy system

  • Understand the new tenancy structure and how it affects security of tenure
  • Know what landlords and agents must provide and when

3. Identify unlawful practices and know how to challenge them

•              Spot illegal eviction, harassment, and noncompliance

•              Understand notice requirements and what makes a notice invalid

•              Know what evidence to gather and how to escalate concerns

4. Understand repairs, safety, and property standards

•              Know what landlords are responsible for

•              Recognise how the new enforcement framework supports tenants

•              Understand how to report issues effectively

5. Navigate rent increases and dispute processes

•              Understand when and how rent can be increased

•              Know what to do if a rent increase feels unfair or unaffordable

6. Know where to get help and support

•              Identify trusted sources of advice

•              Understand the role of the local authority and redress mechanisms

Trainer Bio: 

Our Tenant Trainer is a housing trainer with over 20 years’ experience supporting tenants and landlords to understand their rights and responsibilities. They began their career at Shelter, where they spent seven years as a Senior Trainer developing and delivering training for housing advisers on homelessness, disrepair, and tenants’ rights. That grounding in tenant advocacy continues to shape her clear, practical, and compassionate approach.

They later founded a lettings agency and worked as a landlord and property investor, giving them a rare insight into how issues look from both sides of the housing system. Since 2014 they ran their own training company, delivering accessible, engaging sessions for organisations across the private and social housing sectors.

They have also held nonexecutive roles with Nomad, a Sheffield charity supporting young people into safe housing. Their blend of tenantfocused experience and sectorwide knowledge makes her a trusted, relatable trainer for tenants who want to feel informed and confident navigating their housing rights.
