Are you aware that tenant fees may be scrapped?

Following a survey of landlords completed by the largest online letting agency, UPad, it has come to light that 54% of landlords are not aware of the Governments proposal to scrap tenant fees following the abolition of tenant fees in Scotland.

At present the fees that tenants are subject to can range from £50 up to £500 and include fees to cover the costs of referencing, credit checks, inventories and the tenancy agreement. Further fees can also become payable when renewing a tenancy or checking-out of a property and each Agent structures their fees differently, often leaving tenants dazed and confused.

The abolition of tenant fees in England is favoured by tenants, with most landlords feeling quite relaxed about the proposals but will it result in Agents charging landlords more to recoup their losses?

It has also come to light following the survey by UPad that 60% of tenants would prefer their rent to be capped over the abolition of tenant fees, so perhaps the government’s priorities are not quite right. What are your thoughts?
