Managing Prescription Cannabis Use in Housing - A free Webinar

The use of prescription cannabis in residential settings is raising important questions for ASB and housing professionals. With over 45,000 people now prescribed Cannabis-Based Products for Medicinal Use (CBPMs), a number expected to rise to 60,000 by the end of 2024, landlords and enforcement officers are encountering new challenges in balancing the rights of individuals with the wider impact on communities.

To provide much-needed clarity, the Cannabis Industry Council has published new guidance, addressing key concerns such as:

Balancing rights and responsibilities – Where does the Equality Act come in, and how does it impact enforcement?
Clarifying responsibility – Should action sit with housing providers, local authorities, or police?
Managing complaints and expectations – How can cases be handled fairly and effectively?
Understanding legal considerations – What does this mean for tenancy agreements and policy decisions?

Further to recent updates and communications you may have seen, the Home Office intend to increase the level of Civil Penalties for Right to Rent breaches.

A two hour online course that covers the Right to Rent Scheme is now available and is presented by qualified Home Office trainers.

The Home Office also now offer training on Document Fraud, Introduction to Immigration, and Right to Work.

Fitness for Habitation and HHSRS Awareness Course For Landlords (Classroom based course)

Training for Landlords and Agents

The Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) was developed as a component of the Housing Act 2004 to replace the Fitness Standard. It has been in force since 2006 but has been given more bite due to the introduction of the Housing (Fitness for Habitation) Act 2018.

Who should attend?

All Landlords and agents who actively let out properties in England. The course will help landlords and agents come to terms with the practical application and implications of the Housing (Fitness for Habitation) Act 2018 and the HHSRS. By the end of this course, participants will understand the principles behind the Housing Health and Safety Rating System and will understand how to identify the common deficiencies and defects within their rental properties.

Course delivery

A short day - classroom based session

The course covers:

• The Housing (Fitness for Habitation) Act 2018

• Principles behind the HHSRS and the link between the two

• The 29 Hazards • Identifying deficiencies and understanding risk

• Practical examples of deficiencies in dwellings for group discussion
